Quick Image Editing for Photo Showers

Do you hate fussing with image editing software to re-size and crop photos to when entering a photo show?  ImageSizer is a nice light program that will quickly re-size, rotate, and crop your images.  Best of all it is free and like the Klok software we highlighted in our Keeping Track of  Time post ImageSizer also runs on the Adobe Air Platform.

The first thing you need to do is open up the images that you would like to re-size.  Next to the thumbnail of each image is controls for rotating and cropping the image.  ImageSizer even allows you to edit the name of your re-sized file which is perfect if the photo show you are entering has specific requirements for the file names of your images.  As you can see from the screen shot that each step is clearly marked in the software.  In step two you can set the maximum width and height that your images will be re sized to.  There are areas for future settings to rename files in bulk and to add watermarks to your images as well.

Keeping Track of Time

Klok week view

When doing work on commission or for later resale it is import to know how much time you have in the project.  Knowing how much time you spend working on different aspects of your work will allow to better price your work.  Klok is an advance time tracking program that uses the Adobe Air platform.  You can set up a project in Klok for each commission you have, allowing you to keep tabs of your time for each separately.  Klok also allows you  to set up sub projects under each project, which is great for commissions that require multiple phases.  For example if you a client commissions you to re-sculpt portions of a model and paint,  you can set up sub projects for, re-sculpting/repositioning work, prepping, and finish work.

To keep your time in Klok you can add blocks of time after you have completed working for the day or you can use Klok’s built-in time that works like stop watch so you can start and stop time as you are working.

If you have another method of keeping track of time let us know in the comments.

DIY Photo Lighting

In the past we have had several articles on how to construct your own DIY photo cube as one method to improve your model horse photography. Photo cubes are great but you may find that they restrict the your options during the photo session or might not be big enough for the set up that you are trying to shoot.

Below is a video may give you a few ideas for creating your own set up using some cheap fluorescent light, car window shade, and Velcro.  While the entire set up as a whole maybe over kill for shooting models there are definitly bits and pieces that you can incorporate into your own set up.

Creating an OOAK Micro Mini

An artist’s step by step presentation on how to create an OOAK Micro Mini – creating OMBRA MAI FU from Roustam by MAB of Italy

Hi to all FL members Very Happy

As already announced by Katja…. I decided to write a little article on the creation of this beautiful boy “Ombra mai fu”….

of course, Katja has already described which sources were used as inspiration for it’s realization

(a painting by Giorgio Vasari (1511-1574) and one by Nicolas Poussin (1594 -1665).

I did not think I’d create an article, therefore I do not have in progress pix, but only photos that show the main creation steps.

Whatever subject I approach, that needs a modification/customization or is done from scratch, I divide work into sections or phazes (steps).

Build your own table top exhaust hood.

In the past we have looked into making our own exhaust system for various projects.  One idea that never came to mind was recycling an old exhaust hood from the kitchen.

Building a small fume hood for stinky projectsMore cool how to projects

Cheap DIY photo cube.

A while back we had a story with a DIY photo cube out of PVC.  Which is nice but it is clunky to store and getting all the PVC and fittings isn’t cheap.  Recently I stumbled on a how to article that looks to be even easier and cheaper (15 bucks).

Materials list is as follows:

Wire coat hangers

White fabric

Bristol Board (or any other board for your background)

Fabric glue or Fusible tape

Binder clips

Craft Wire

You can find the article at JPG Magazine.

Below is a picture we took in a photo cube bought from Ebay a few years back to give you an ideal how model horses photograph.

We used the Reveal incandescent light bulbs rather than the compact florescent bulbs mentioned in the article with a couple of desk lamps and a couple of 5 dollar clip lights from Walmart with the metal shade.

Another great arena filler

If you don’t like sand or coffee grounds as arena fillers in your performance entries, there’s another great filler out there for arena set ups – Lizard Litter!

tips for keeping those chinas in one piece!

I have a few, expensive chinas. I hardly bring them to shows, but over the years they have shown a little. Ive come up with ways to keep them mint.

THE HEAD
Ever seen the movie “the mummy”?? well, its probaly good reference material for this part. Get some toilet paper and mummify your chinas head…..this also makes for interesting performance setups….. :) Be sure to protect those ears!! Then I recommend putting a balloon over the models face, yes a unflated balloon…it works!!

THE TORSO
Then mummify the torso. Wrap it in gift wrapping, the papery/tissuey kind….then felt then bubblewrap…got that?

THE TAIL
Mummify as well!!

THEN….
If you can afford it, get a gun case and cut the foam to fit your model….gun cases are available at WalMart,Kmart, etc…

ENJOY YOUR CLINKIES!! :)
